Question
Is a post-interview "thank you" letter really a necessity?
I read somewhere that only about 5% of job applicants follow up on an interview with a thank you letter. I personally hate writing them, because to me they seem desperate and cheesy in a professional context. And, as an interviewer in my previous position, I probably interviewed 8-10 people, and thank you letters made zero impact on my own hiring recommendations. What do you think? Do thank you letters really matter?

It is better to send a thank you letter as you do not know how it will be perceived by the interviewer if you do not. All interviewers are different and my experience has shown that a number of them expect a thank you letter and react negatively if a candidate does not make the effort. For samples of more informal (ie. less cheesy!) thank you letters and emails you can go to the free webste below.

I cannot believe that anyone would advise you to NOT send a thank you note after a job interview. My advice is that you should send a thank you note after any job interview that you actually want. I've had two companies now spanning 15 years and hired a ton of people. I'm continually amazed at people's thought process that they do not need to send a thank you note. Let me be honest here. I don't need to be thanked. That's not what the note really tells me. The note tells me me that the person applying for the job is going to do the right thing if they do work for me. Otherwise, I can expect that they will be lazy, not care about my customers, not go the extra mile...basically not really care. I hire people who really want the job. That note helps me understand who those people are. Analogy: Why do we shake hands? Do we need to touch each other? No! Its just the accepted practice. Send the note! Finally, in my opinion you do not need to send a formal written note. In this day, email is fine and I prefer it.
